Sunday’s getting closer . . .

So the big Fiesta Show and Sale is day after tomorrow – I’m sorta ready, but this morning I really wanted to work on something new for the show. I started with some square black frames that I had ordered just because they were on sale. Then I printed some digital photos of gravestone angels (but of course!) and started working on two small collages that remind me of the Guardian series. I call the new series El Ala y la Oración (the Wing and the Prayer) because they feature bird feathers and monument faces. They are turning out so well – it’s great to feel them come together. Here are the first two – with any luck I’ll finish four more by Sunday. These are behind glass so there is a bit of reflection in the photo, but it adds to the overall effect, perhaps. The hardest part was figuring out how to create the shadow box. I did it with thin strips of black foamcore mounted against the inside edges of the frames – come by the Studio on Sunday and I’ll show you the trick!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Spirit Dolls, Opening Night

The second big Studio event in two days was just as enjoyable as the poetry reading in a different way – a nice crowd of artisans and friends gathered to see the Spirit Dolls and to ask questions about their construction and uses. There was lots of curiosity and admiration for the work, especially when the guests learned that the dolls had been constructed in just two hours during the workshop. Once again, many of the people who came tonight saw old friends that they hadn’t seen in years or discovered new connections with people they hadn’t met before. I love it when that happens! There’s something about that Studio space that encourages those kinds of connections . . ..  . and here’s a video from this lovely evening:

What a fun day at the Studio – it was a celebration of art and love and even spontaneous guitar music – here’s a little video. More to come, but special thank to Lesta, Jan, and Alison – and all the friends who came (and Mike for his amazing food!)

I survived this morning’s tooth pulling (hooray), and, almost like a reward, the article my friend Jasmina Wellinghoff wrote about my new work came out today in SA Woman Magazine. She did a fabulous job of organizing my randomness. And Janet Rogers took a photo that made me wish I looked like that 🙂 – I am very grateful to both of them. Rune and Relic

The new “Rune and Relic” finish on my little face shards has been a hit on the EarthShards Etsy shop – it’s so easy, too. The trick is to use one of my favorite substances, walnut ink, on the unglazed clay. The Terra Cotta ink goes on the terra cotta faces and the Eucalyptus ink goes on the white faces. Voila! If you are not familiar with Walnut Ink, it’s great stuff. You can get it lots of places, including Michaels, in a four-pack of spray bottles. Use your 40% coupon, and it’s only about $12.

I think I’m finished with a new collage and may even have overworked it a bit, but for the most part it seems to hang together well. There’s a heavily textured background, some images of angels, a tarot card (the Four of Cups), a photo of eggs that I took last year – copper tape and walnut ink – some experimenting but mostly doing what I know. It’s going to go to LaVida Gallery later this week once it’s matted and framed – dark gray mat, I’m thinking, and thin chrome frame. That I can do myself since it’s simple. I’ve already started a similar one – will see where it goes. Making art is so intense and serene at the same time!
